Europol: Iranian Smuggling Gang Dismantled in Spain

European Union police officials announced on Thursday in an official statement that a human trafficking gang operating in Spain, which was transporting Iranian citizens to the UK for a substantial fee, has been dismantled. According to Reuters, citing Europol, over a hundred individuals have been arrested in connection with this human trafficking gang. Reports indicate that this criminal gang, which operated from the city of Malaga in southern Spain, provided fake passports, flight tickets, and temporary accommodation for each illegal migrant in exchange for 25,000 euros. Following a year-long investigation by the police of Spain, the UK, and Portugal, Spanish police arrested 14 members of this gang in Malaga. The investigation reportedly began when seven Iranians were arrested at Hamburg Airport in Germany last year with identity documents primarily from Spain, all of whom intended to travel to the UK. All their tickets were issued by a travel agency in Malaga. Last week, more than 40 others accused of selling their identity documents to this gang were arrested by Spanish police. According to Europol, 44 Iranian citizens were also arrested at various airports across Europe, carrying fake documents attributed to this group. Europol states that the leader of this human trafficking gang was also arrested at London Heathrow Airport while attempting to travel to Brazil. Reuters reports that the UK Home Office has confirmed the occurrence of these arrests but has refrained from releasing details. In April of this year, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the arrest of an Iranian accused of human trafficking who had flown from Tehran to Georgia upon arrival at Tbilisi Airport. Last December, the UK National Crime Agency reported that 33 members of a human trafficking network involved in smuggling Iranian migrants to the UK were arrested during a part of a broad European investigation in the UK and Greece. Since 2015, a wave of refugees has surged towards Europe, frequently making headlines and prompting significant reactions in Europe. In 2015 alone, over a million refugees entered Europe, about half of whom were Syrian, with many heading to Germany. Among these refugees, a significant number were Iranian. The UN Refugee Agency reported in June that approximately 65.6 million people worldwide have been displaced and homeless, with the potential for this number to increase due to escalating conflicts in Sudan.
