Eurovision Organizers Prevent Entry of Palestinian Flags or Political Symbols into the Singing Competition Venue in Sweden

The organizers of the European singing competition known as 'Eurovision' announced on Thursday, May 2, that they will prevent the entry of Palestinian flags or political symbols into the venue of this artistic event in Sweden. This announcement comes amid the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, which has also impacted Eurovision, and it is expected that pro-Palestinian groups will organize large demonstrations in the Swedish city of Malmö during the singing competition. Michel Rouvray, head of communications for the European Broadcasting Union, the organization hosting Eurovision, stated that attendees at the venue can only hold flags of participating countries, as well as the rainbow flags of sexual and gender minorities. He told the Associated Press that the union reserves the right to 'remove any flags, symbols, clothing, items, and other banners that may be used for display through the television coverage of this event.' According to Swedish news agencies, officials have been instructed to deny entry to flags or banners containing Palestinian political messages and slogans. However, Martin Österdahl, the executive supervisor of Eurovision, mentioned that this rule has existed in the past and is not related to recent events in Gaza. The entry of national flags from participating countries is very common and legally permissible, but Palestinians are not participating in this singing competition, and the entry of their flags and political symbols is not allowed. Israel is participating in Eurovision, and the entry of its flag into the venue is legal; however, officials stated that they will also deal with banners containing political messages and slogans from Israeli supporters. The Eurovision singing competition is one of the most-watched artistic events in the world, held this year in Malmö, Sweden, where it was previously crowned champion. The Swedish police, citing the threat of terrorism, stated that Eurovision will be under strict security measures. Pro-Palestinian supporters, who are calling for Israel's expulsion from Eurovision, announced that they will protest near the competition venue. The Israeli National Security Council issued a warning on Thursday, urging its citizens to avoid traveling to Malmö, which is 'a center for anti-Israeli demonstrations.' According to this council, terrorists may take advantage of the existing anti-Israeli atmosphere to attack Israelis attending Eurovision in Sweden. Sweden raised its level of terrorist threats last year due to incidents related to the burning of the Quran, which was met with protests from many Muslims. This issue, along with the ongoing war in Gaza, has heightened security concerns during Eurovision in Malmö.
