EU's Request to the Islamic Republic for 'De-escalation' Instead of 'Escalation' in the Region

On Monday, April 6, the EU's foreign policy chief announced in a post on social media platform 'X' that he had requested the Iranian Foreign Minister to work towards reducing tensions in the region during a phone call. Josep Borrell wrote: 'In my phone conversation with (Hossein) Amir-Abdollahian, I emphasized that the Iranian government must refrain from escalating nuclear tensions and release detained European citizens as soon as possible.' He added that he conveyed Europe's concerns about the potential sale of missiles from the Islamic Republic to Russia to Amir-Abdollahian and urged him to use his country's influence over Islamist proxy groups to reduce conflicts in the region. The website of the Iranian Foreign Ministry also reported that Amir-Abdollahian expressed appreciation for Borrell's views on Gaza, denied sending weapons to Russia and the use of Iranian weapons against Ukrainian interests, and emphasized the continuation of cooperation between the Islamic Republic and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The claim of continued cooperation with the IAEA comes despite the IAEA Director-General expressing 'deep regret' on March 5 that the Iranian government has not changed its decision regarding the prohibition of activities of 'several experienced agency inspectors' and emphasized that the Islamic Republic has been suspending the implementation of the Additional Protocol and limiting the agency's access for three years. The United States also condemned many of the Islamic Republic's nuclear actions in a statement on March 16, calling for the dilution of all uranium reserves enriched to 60% and a complete halt to the production of enriched uranium at this level.
