Every Human Has a Name; Israel and Holocaust Remembrance Day

Holocaust remembrance ceremonies, commemorating the murder of millions of Jews during the Nazi regime, were held on Thursday, April 23, in Israel. On Thursday morning, a two-minute siren of respect sounded across Israel, and people stood in silence to honor the victims of the Holocaust. Additionally, various ceremonies titled 'Every Human Has a Name' took place at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, the Knesset, Israel's parliament, and dozens of other locations, where Israelis with ancestors who were Holocaust survivors read the names of family members and acquaintances who were killed during the Nazi regime. Several political figures and senior military officials in Israel, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, were among those reading the names of their deceased relatives and ancestors. Furthermore, some of the last elderly Holocaust survivors or subsequent generations from families of Nazi-era survivors shared their memories of that time in special media programs in Israel. Every year, Holocaust remembrance ceremonies are held a few days before the anniversary of Israel's establishment, and this year, the event coincided with the 70th anniversary of Israel's founding. However, in 2005, the United Nations General Assembly declared January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a resolution supported by 104 countries and opposed by several, including Iran. During the events known as the 'Holocaust' under the Nazi regime in Germany and parts of Europe, especially from 1941 until the end of World War II in 1945, millions were killed, but the Nazis deliberately designed and executed the murder of over six million Jews due to their race and religion as part of the so-called 'Final Solution'; they confined Jews in ghettos and then transported them to forced labor and death camps, killing millions. Meanwhile, alongside the Holocaust remembrance ceremonies in Israel, several senior officials from the country, along with thousands of students, traveled to Poland to participate in the memorial for Holocaust victims at the Birkenau-Auschwitz camp. Yossi Cohen, head of the Mossad, General Gadi Eisenkot, chief of the Israeli army staff, and dozens of senior Israeli officers were among those who recently traveled to Poland. This year, delegations from dozens of other countries, including the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan, as well as groups active in the fight against racism, including the English football team Chelsea, are also present at the memorial ceremonies for Holocaust victims at the Auschwitz camp. Polish dignitaries, including Andrzej Duda, the country's president, attended the Holocaust remembrance ceremonies. Despite a thirty-year history of Holocaust remembrance ceremonies in Poland, a recent law passed by the Polish parliament, which prohibits calling Poland and the death camps located in the country Nazi, and imposes penalties of imprisonment and fines for it, has strained relations between Poland and Israel. The new law argues that Poland was occupied by the Nazi regime during World War II and that the Nazis established death camps, including Birkenau-Auschwitz, on Polish soil, emphasizing that the death camps should not be referred to as Polish. Recently, Poland has rejected strong objections from Israeli officials regarding this new law, but the Israeli parliament, which warned that it would enact a law against the Polish law, has currently refrained from pursuing this threat. This year's Holocaust remembrance ceremonies coincided with heightened security in the region and readiness in northern Israel due to the potential for attacks from Syria or Lebanon. Following an airstrike early Monday on the T-4 airbase in Homs province, which Russia attributed to Israel and in which at least seven Iranian soldiers were killed, Israel assessed that Iran or its allies might attack Israel. Israel has not accepted responsibility for the attack on Syria, but Ali Akbar Velayati, an advisor to the Iranian leader on international affairs, stated during a visit to Damascus that 'the crime committed will certainly not go unanswered.' However, Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Wednesday evening at the opening of the Holocaust memorial that 'decades after the murder of Jews by the Nazis and their collaborators, the Iranian regime is now seeking to destroy Israel.' Mr. Netanyahu sent a 'message' to Iranian leaders not to 'test Israel's resolve,' as he stated that 'Israel does not compromise in defending its interests and will crush any aggression in its infancy.' Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the former president of Iran, is recognized as one of the contemporary Holocaust deniers in the world.
