Examination of the Threat Posed by Iran-Supported Houthis at the Security Council

The United Nations Security Council is convening to discuss "threats to international peace and security," including the threats posed by the Houthis. Gideon Sa'ar, Israel's Foreign Minister, requested this meeting last week by sending a letter to the U.S. Ambassador to the UN, who is currently presiding over the Security Council. The Israeli Foreign Ministry announced that the meeting will begin with a public discussion and then move to a closed session, followed by a speech from Danny Danon, Israel's Ambassador. In this session, Mohamed Khaled Khiari, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific, will be present. The Israeli army has reported that the Iran-backed Houthis have launched missiles towards Israel at least six times in the past two weeks and have carried out over 200 missile attacks and 170 drone attacks against Israel in the past year. The Israeli Foreign Minister stated that the Iranian proxy Houthis have conducted relentless attacks against Israeli citizens and cities over the past year, disrupted international shipping lines, and engaged in hostage-taking, including of UN staff. He called on all countries seeking global stability to add the Houthis to their lists of terrorist organizations. According to Gideon Sa'ar, "the time has come for the international community to take action against the aggressions of the Houthis." Following the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 against Israel, the Houthis, alongside Hezbollah and other Iranian proxies, began direct attacks on Israel and intensified their assaults against vessels in the Red Sea. In response, Israel has targeted the military positions of this group in Sana'a and the western coasts of Yemen in several instances, promising to bring them to the fate of other Iranian proxies. The renewed missile attacks by the Houthis came after Israeli strikes on Sana'a. The Israeli Prime Minister stated: "Our work with the Houthis has just begun." The Israeli army confirmed that they targeted Houthi military positions in Yemen. Gallant stated that the U.S. and Israel must cooperate against the Houthis in Yemen. Two Israeli media outlets reported that the head of Mossad called for an attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran. The interception of Houthi missiles in the skies over Israel was carried out by the Israeli army.
