Arzhang Mortazavi, a protesting student deprived of education, has been summoned to the criminal enforcement branch in Karaj to serve a seven-month prison sentence. According to documents obtained by Voice of America, this computer science student from Kharazmi University in Karaj must report to branch 7 of the criminal enforcement on Saturday, April 25. The first branch of the Revolutionary Court in Karaj sentenced Arzhang Mortazavi to one year in prison, a two-year travel ban, and deprivation of access to social media on December 19, 2023, for 'propaganda against the regime.' His prison sentence was reduced to seven months by the appellate court of Alborz province. Documents from Voice of America indicate that Mousa Asf-al-Hosseini, the judge of the first branch of the Revolutionary Court in Karaj, accused this member of the families of political prisoners of engaging in 'destructive' and 'security-threatening' actions based on 'reports from security agencies.' 'Personal, familial, and social background' of Arzhang Mortazavi were also among the criteria for issuing this ruling in the first instance court. He is the son of Abdolrasool Mortazavi, a political prisoner and one of the signatories of the resignation statement of Ali Khamenei. The central committee of the Ministry of Science of the Islamic Republic condemned Arzhang Mortazavi to a four-term 'temporary ban from education and relocation from Kharazmi University to Damghan University' in October 2023 for 'creating chaos and unrest at the university.' This protesting student was arrested during the nationwide protests of 2022 following the death of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini while in custody of the morality police and was released after two months in Karaj Central Prison due to a government 'pardon.' Abdolrasool Mortazavi, in a message from prison, rejected the notion that his son Arzhang Mortazavi and other prisoners were freed due to 'pardon,' stating it was the result of their resistance and the retreat of the Islamic Republic.
