Exclusive: The Islamic Revolutionary Court Accuses Pouran Nazemi of 'Moharebeh' and 'Corruption on Earth'

According to documents obtained by Voice of America, the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Jiroft, Kerman Province, has charged human rights activist Pouran Nazemi with 'Moharebeh' (waging war against God) and 'Corruption on Earth'. A source informed Voice of America's Persian section that this case is being processed in Branch 1 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Jiroft and was initiated following a complaint from the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Kerman Province. The attribution of these charges could lead to the harshest punishment, namely 'execution', while the source emphasized that Pouran Nazemi is a peace-seeking human rights activist in Iran. The source stressed that the judiciary is resuming practices from decades past, stating, 'They are going back to the 1980s,' and warned that 'if we remain silent, like in the case of the plaintiffs, repression will intensify and they will come after others as well.' According to this source, 'if the people do not support' Nazemi, there is a possibility that the case could proceed in this manner and even lead to a 'conviction'. Pouran Nazemi, a civil activist and human rights defender who has been arrested and imprisoned several times, is one of the supporters of the families of plaintiffs, including the mothers of those killed in the November 2019 protests. In a previous interview with Voice of America, she stated that the Islamic Republic always interrogates and arrests civil and syndical activists 'with security charges' and 'fabricates cases' against them.
