Exclusive; USA: We condemn the execution of Mohammad Qabadi and Farhad Salimi

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State condemned the execution of Mohammad Qabadi and Farhad Salimi and expressed condolences to their families on Tuesday, January 24. In a written response to Voice of America, he stated: "We condemn the Iranian regime's continued use of the death penalty against people who participated in the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests, the latest of which is the execution of Mohammad Qabadi." The spokesperson described the execution of Mohammad Qabadi as unjust and referred to medical reports indicating that he should not have been executed. He questioned the legitimacy of all verdicts issued by Iranian courts, citing that individuals are tortured, coerced into confessions, and face restrictions on legal counsel. The spokesperson wrote: "Mohammad Qabadi should be alive today." He described the lack of fair trial sessions for many other people in Iran as a continuous method of the regime to suppress dissent. Regarding the execution of Farhad Salimi, the U.S. spokesperson referenced reports of torture and his confession, emphasizing that his trial was by no means fair. From the perspective of the U.S. Department of State, charges based on "national security" are a pretext for the Islamic Republic to imprison or execute activists and ethnic and religious minorities, typically brought against them in "sham trial sessions." The spokesperson deemed such accusations and trials unacceptable and noted that Farhad Salimi should also be alive today. In conclusion, he condemned the death penalty as a punishment for people exercising their human rights. According to the U.S. Department of State spokesperson, the Biden administration continues to support the people of Iran "in practical ways, both visible and invisible, in coordination with allies and partner countries." Abram Paley, Deputy Special Representative for Iran, stated on Tuesday on the messaging platform "X" that "Mohammad Qabadi should be alive today" and added: "However, the Islamic Republic must know that we strongly condemn the sham trials and executions of all those who participated in the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests and consider these actions unjust." He expressed sympathy for Mohammad Qabadi's family, stating: "Mohammad Qabadi and all those killed by the Iranian judiciary will not be forgotten."
