Execution of Seven Foreigners Accused of Drug Trafficking in Indonesia by Firing Squad

Reports indicate that seven foreigners accused of drug trafficking, of various nationalities, along with an Indonesian, have been executed in Indonesia, although a Filipino citizen was not executed at the last moment. According to a Reuters report on April 27, Indonesian media reported that on Wednesday evening, eight individuals accused of drug trafficking were executed by firing squad, although these reports have not yet been confirmed. Jakarta has rejected the latest requests to revoke the death sentences, stating that the sentences will be carried out. The accused in this case were citizens of Nigeria, Australia, Brazil, and Indonesia. An Indonesian prosecutor's spokesperson stated that the execution of 'Mary Jane Veloso,' a Filipino mother of two who was arrested in 2010 while attempting to smuggle 2.6 kilograms of heroin hidden in her suitcase into Indonesia, has been postponed. The spokesperson mentioned that at the request of the Manila government and after she provided information about a drug trafficker to the Philippine government, her execution was delayed and not carried out at the last moment. Several Filipino citizens gathered outside the Philippine embassy in Indonesia expressed their joy upon hearing this news. The United Nations condemned the executions, and relations between Australia and Indonesia have become tense over the execution orders. Hours before the announcement of the executions, people in several Australian cities held protests demanding that the government take 'decisive action' if the two Australian accused are executed. The Indonesian government has not disclosed the exact timing of the executions, but reports indicate that similar executions last year were carried out late at night and early in the morning. Ambulances and vehicles carrying coffins have also been seen on one of the central Indonesian islands, which is a possible location for the executions. The President of the Philippines stated that at the last moment, he requested the Indonesian government to halt Veloso's execution, as she may be a key witness in an organized drug trafficking case. One of the accused, who was an Australian citizen, was allowed to marry his Indonesian girlfriend before the execution. The two Australian accused were arrested in 2005 during a heroin trafficking operation to Indonesia.
