Explosion in Kabul Leaves 11 Dead; ISIS Claims Responsibility

In Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, a suicide bomber detonated himself while security forces were conducting operations to arrest suspects involved in the distribution of drugs and alcohol. The Islamic State group, or ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for several explosions in Afghanistan over the past two years, took responsibility for this attack in a statement published on the 'Amaq' website. Wahid Majrooh, spokesman for Afghanistan's Ministry of Health, announced that during this suicide attack that occurred on Thursday, 11 people were killed and 25 were injured. He added that the injured were sent to several hospitals in Kabul for treatment. Eyewitnesses reported that nearly four police vehicles were dispatched to the scene to remove the dead and injured from the site. Police forces present at the scene stated that the attacker was wearing a police uniform and approached the drug and alcohol search team. Bashir Mujahid, spokesman for Kabul police, said: 'The police were present to prevent any protests, and it was during this time that the suicide attacker reached the team and detonated himself.' Although Afghan military forces have achieved victories in the fight against Taliban militants over the past year with the support of U.S. airstrikes, Kabul remains the scene of numerous attacks targeting civilians. The Thursday attack occurred just days after another attack in Kabul, where a suicide bomber detonated himself in a Shia cultural center, resulting in 41 deaths and 80 injuries. ISIS also claimed responsibility for that attack.
