Extension of Detention for Suspect in Leak of Classified Information Regarding Israeli Attack on Iran

A Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) analyst accused of leaking highly classified information prior to Israel's planned attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran earlier this year will remain in custody until trial. This ruling was issued by federal judge Patricia Tolliver Giles on Wednesday. With this ruling, the decision of another judge who granted conditional release to 34-year-old Asif Rahman from Vienna, Virginia, last week is overturned. Rahman is accused of leaking information related to national defense. During the case review, more details emerged about the government's investigation into this leak and the analyst accused of publishing classified documents via the Telegram messaging app in October. According to the Associated Press, during the hearing on Wednesday, prosecutor Troy Edwards stated that Rahman had an ideological motive, although he did not provide further explanation about this ideology, adding that this conclusion was based on the dismissal of other motives, as Rahman comes from a wealthy family and has access to a multi-million dollar family trust, thus lacking financial motivation. Edwards also referenced eight pages of notes found during Rahman's arrest in Cambodia last month. Rahman was working at the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh. These notes included two 'to-do' lists, one of which contained parts of what appeared to be encrypted text along with an unencrypted sentence regarding U.S. missile capabilities. According to Edwards, investigators have not yet been able to decrypt the text. Official court documents did not specifically reference the leaked classified content, but details presented in court indicate that these documents relate to leaks from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency in October. These documents show that Israel was mobilizing forces for a military attack on the Islamic Republic in response to a missile attack from within Iran on October 11 (October 1) against Israel. Israel eventually launched an attack on air defense systems and missile facilities in Iran in late October. In court documents, the government stated that the leak of this information delayed Israel's planned attack. Edwards stated that the unstable nature of the Middle East makes this leak of classified information extremely dangerous. Amy Jeffers, Rahman's attorney, referred to anonymous sources in news articles that downplayed the significance of the leaked information. Jeffers also noted that pre-trial detention is rare for defendants with similar charges. Asif Rahman was born in California and moved with his family to Cincinnati as a child. He was an outstanding student in high school and, according to court documents provided by his attorney, graduated from Yale University in three years. He and his wife now live with his parents in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Rahman made his first court appearance in Guam last month. Jeffers stated after Wednesday's hearing that she intends to challenge the detention ruling. This is the same case that Israeli media previously claimed involved Aryan Tabatabai, an Iranian-American employee of the U.S. Department of Defense as the accused. However, U.S. Department of Defense officials did not confirm that report. It had previously been established that the accused in this case is a CIA employee, not a Department of Defense employee.
