Extensive Russian Attacks on Ukraine's Fuel and Energy Centers; Power Plant in Kyiv Targeted

On Thursday, April 23, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had targeted Ukraine's fuel and energy centers in extensive retaliatory attacks. According to the ministry, these attacks were in response to Ukraine's efforts to damage Russia's oil, gas, and energy sectors. The statement claimed that following recent Russian attacks, the activities of Ukrainian military industries, energy transfers to combat zones, and fuel supply for the country's armed forces were disrupted. In this context, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian missiles and drones destroyed a major power plant in the Kyiv region and attacked power centers in several other areas. Russia's attacks on infrastructure, especially Ukraine's power centers, have complicated Kyiv's ability to supply electricity to many regions of the country. According to estimates by Reuters, Ukrainian drone attacks have reduced Russia's oil refining capacity by about 14 percent by the end of last month. Russia describes these drone attacks as 'terrorism,' while Ukraine justifies them as self-defense. Reports indicate that in recent Russian attacks, the largest power plant in Kyiv was completely destroyed. This attack caused widespread fires at the 'Tripliska' thermal power plant and severely damaged the turbines. According to Ukrainian officials, this attack did not result in casualties and did not cause power outages in the capital and surrounding areas. The Tripliska company has completely lost three of its power plants in recent Russian attacks and is unable to produce electricity. Since the beginning of the war, Russia has continuously targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure to confront the country with shortages of fuel, energy, electricity, and other essential services, especially during the winter season.
