Fact-Finding Committee: Widespread Repression and Crimes Against Humanity Continue in Iran

The International Fact-Finding Committee of the United Nations has reported extensive human rights violations and crimes against humanity in Iran, which will be presented at the fifty-eighth session of the Human Rights Council. This report, based on two years of research, examines the repression of protests, use of violence, unlawful detentions, torture, and extrajudicial executions as tools of psychological pressure. According to the committee's findings, since the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the 'Guidance Patrol' on September 16, 2022, the Islamic Republic has systematically violated citizens' rights through the repression of protesters, pressure on victims' families, and harassment of human rights defenders. This report, based on over 38,000 documents and 281 interviews with witnesses and victims, provides evidence of the massacre of protesters that was declared as 'suicide' and also highlights the widespread use of extrajudicial executions in prisons. The report emphasizes that two and a half years after the protests began, women and girls continue to be targets of discrimination and repression. Despite promises from Masoud Pezeshkian to ease restrictions on mandatory hijab enforcement, the government has intensified pressures by enacting stricter laws, increasing surveillance, and prosecuting women opposing the mandatory hijab. These actions are part of a broader crackdown against activists and supporters of the 'Women, Life, Freedom' movement. In another section of the report, it states that the Islamic Republic has intensified surveillance, judicial harassment, and repression of activists and human rights defenders. The committee highlighted the inadequacy of internal accountability mechanisms and stressed the need for international measures to ensure justice and compensation for victims. A roadmap for achieving accountability will also be published alongside the full report on March 18.
