Failure of G7 Leaders on Climate Change Agreement Amid Calls for Cyber Warfare

The leaders of the G7 industrialized nations failed to convince Donald Trump, the President of the United States, to support the climate change agreement. This failure occurred despite hours of negotiations on the first day of the group's meeting in Taormina, Sicily, which was described as 'controversial' by the German Chancellor. The G7 meeting on Friday, June 5, began just days after a suicide bombing in Manchester, UK, which killed 22 people. According to Reuters, the Sicily summit issued a joint statement calling for a fight against terrorism and urged internet service providers and social media companies to 'significantly increase' their efforts to control extremist content. Paolo Gentiloni, the Italian Prime Minister hosting the summit, stated that the G7 leaders also had a long way to go to reach a common language on trade, which has been a contentious issue between Trump and the other six leaders. However, Reuters adds that no progress was made on the climate change agreement and reducing greenhouse gases. The Italian Prime Minister told reporters, 'The clear issue is the United States' position on the climate change agreement. The other countries have expressed their full agreement with this treaty,' referring to the 2015 Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gases. American officials had previously stated that Donald Trump, who during his campaign called climate change a 'hoax,' was not expected to make a decision on this issue at the Taormina meeting. However, leaders from other industrialized countries, including Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, and Emmanuel Macron, the French President, hoped to persuade the U.S. President at his first major international meeting since taking office four months ago. Merkel described the discussion on climate change at the Sicily summit as 'controversial,' noting that 'very sharp' views were exchanged between the parties. Gary Cohn, an economic advisor to Trump, stated that the President's views on climate change are 'evolving' and that he will ultimately take a position that is beneficial to the United States. The summit is being held in a luxury hotel that was once a Dominican monastery and a Nazi air force base during World War II. One day earlier, Trump criticized U.S. allies in NATO for contributing very little to defense spending and described Germany's trade surplus as 'very bad' in a meeting with EU officials. Reuters reports that Trump's speech stunned U.S. allies in NATO, who expected him to reaffirm Washington's commitment to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all. They were also dissatisfied that he did not mention Russia. Russia, which was a member of the G8, was expelled from the group in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. Allegations from U.S. intelligence agencies regarding Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election to aid Trump, along with investigations into contacts between his campaign and Russian officials, have cast a shadow over Trump's presidency and hindered his ability to fulfill his campaign promise of improving relations with Moscow.
