Fall of a 'Suspicious Aerial Target' in Eastern Israel; Media: It Was a Drone from Iraq's 'Islamic Resistance'

The Israeli army announced that on Monday morning, 'a suspicious aerial target that entered Israeli territory from the east' triggered alarm sirens in the port city of Eilat. According to the Israeli army's statement, this 'target' fell in the Eilat Bay area, causing no casualties and only minor damage to a building. Israeli newspapers reported that the 'target' referred to by the army was a drone belonging to the 'Islamic Resistance' in Iraq, a proxy group of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which had announced an attack on a 'vital target' inside Israel using 'appropriate weapons.' The Times of Israel reported that the Israeli army later confirmed that the attacked building on Monday was an aircraft hangar at the Eilat naval base. The army's statement did not mention whether any attempt was made to destroy the drone, adding that the incident is under investigation. The attack on Monday came a day after the Israeli army reported the destruction of 'a suspicious aerial target' moving from Syrian airspace towards Israel by an Israeli fighter jet. According to the Times of Israel, this drone was likely destroyed near the sky over the city of Daraa in southern Syria. The 'Islamic Resistance' in Iraq also claimed to have attacked a 'vital target' near the city of 'Aylabun' in northern Israel. Following the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 and the onset of the Israeli army's offensive in Gaza aimed at destroying this Islamist group, Iran-aligned militia groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, referred to by the Islamic Republic as the 'Resistance Axis,' have carried out multiple attacks against Israel. Hezbollah, as the most significant proxy group of the Islamic Republic in the region, has almost daily targeted northern Israel in recent months, killing several Israeli citizens, including civilians, and forcing some residents to flee their homes. In response to these attacks, the Israeli army has targeted hundreds of Hezbollah members, including some high-ranking commanders, and has stated that the consequences of a broader war with Hezbollah could affect all of Lebanon. The Houthis in Yemen, as another group supported by the Islamic Republic, have repeatedly attacked international commercial ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea with missiles and drones under the pretext of supporting the Palestinians since early November last year. In recent months, the Houthis have also carried out several missile and drone attacks against the port of Eilat, which is about two thousand kilometers away from Yemen. Iranian-backed Iraqi Shiite militias, like Hezbollah and the Houthis, have claimed to have carried out several attacks against Israel in recent months. Most of the drone attacks by Iraqi Shiite militias have been destroyed before entering Israeli territory. According to the Jerusalem Post, one drone attack by these groups on Elyad in the Golan Heights caused minor damage to some buildings. Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israeli army, in an interview with Newsweek published last Monday, held the Islamic Republic of Iran responsible for the increase in tensions in the region. He stated that '[the government] Iran has occupied Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, and Syria in a very complex manner and uses these countries to fight against Israel... Sunni countries, as well as innocent civilians in the West.' Daniel Hagari emphasized that Israel is now a 'different country' with a different army following the October 7 terrorist attack. While the Islamic Republic denies controlling the 'Resistance Axis' despite abundant evidence, it has always praised the attacks by the groups comprising it against U.S. positions and Israel, including on October 7 last year.
