Families of American Victims of October 7 Terrorist Attack Sue Iranian Government

Families of American victims of the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack by Hamas and its allies in southern Israel have officially filed a lawsuit against the Iranian government, accusing it of supporting the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. According to the New York Times, this lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., detailing the Islamic Republic's financial support for Hamas and other terrorist organizations seeking to destroy Israel. The report, published late Sunday U.S. time, states that the information in the complaint regarding Tehran's support for Hamas, or at least part of this information, is based on documents discovered from the group's centers in Gaza that have been made public. However, the plaintiffs' lawyers appear to have accessed original versions of some documents indicating that a small group of military and political leaders of Hamas held a secret meeting in December 2022 to plan an attack against Israel. The New York Times reports that in this meeting, Yahya Sinwar, the then-leader of Hamas who was killed in Gaza late October this year, requested an additional $7 million per month from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to finance the October 7 attack, referred to as the 'big project.' The newspaper states it has independently reviewed documents related to this meeting and the request for the additional $7 million from the IRGC, as well as documents related to the activities of Hamas's leadership circle in preparing the group for attacks. During the October 7 terrorist attack (15th of Mehr) by Hamas on southern Israel, over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed, and more than 250 others, including women, children, and the elderly, were taken hostage. In response to this attack, Israel launched an offensive against Gaza aimed at destroying Hamas and recovering the kidnapped hostages. While about 100 hostages were exchanged during a temporary ceasefire late last fall for Palestinian prisoners, approximately 100 remain in Hamas captivity, with reports suggesting that some of them have been killed. Among the victims of the October 7 attack are 46 Americans, including several children, and 12 of the hostages were U.S. citizens; seven of them are still held captive, but three are believed to no longer be alive. The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Israel, Canada, Japan, and several other countries have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization.
