Farewell to a Legend; Andreas Brehme, Star of German Football, Passes Away at 63

The 1990 World Cup champion, who led Germany to victory with his goal in the final, suddenly passed away due to cardiac arrest. Susanne Schaefer, Brehme's wife, confirmed this news, stating that he died last night in Munich at the age of 63. Brehme had an outstanding performance at both club and national levels, but his name is intertwined with football history when he scored a penalty against Argentina in the 85th minute of the 1990 World Cup final in Rome, leading West Germany to a 1-0 victory and securing their third World Cup title. Later that year, after the unification of Germany, a unified national football team was formed for the country. Brehme won the Bundesliga twice – once with each of the Bundesliga clubs Bayern Munich and 1. FC Kaiserslautern – and also became the Serie A champion in 1989 with Inter Milan. Rudi Völler, Brehme's teammate in the German national team, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying, "I can't believe the news of Andreas's death. I am very sad about his sudden passing. He was our World Cup champion, but he meant more to me than that. He was a close friend until today. I will miss his beautiful love for life." The president of the German Football Association also released a statement, considering Brehme "one of the best and greatest footballers in German history" and acknowledged that German football owes him a debt. He added, "Alongside Mario Götze, Gerd Müller, and Helmut Rahn, he was one of the four German players who led our national team to World Cup victory. His steel nerves and tackling power, dual-footedness, crossing, passing, and commitment – all these made him stand out, bringing us much joy and many extraordinary moments." Brehme had the ability to play in several positions on the left side of the field and scored 8 goals in 86 international matches for Germany. He was part of the team that became the runner-up in the 1986 World Cup and the 1992 European Championship.
