Fatemeh Sepehri's Lawyer: My Client is Suffering from 'Multiple Illnesses'

Khosrow Ali-Kordi, the lawyer of political prisoner Fatemeh Sepehri in Mashhad, warned in a letter to the head of the judiciary about the danger to his client's life in prison and called for her 'medical release'. In this letter, published on Thursday, January 4, on the social media account of the Dadban Legal Consultation Center, Ali-Kordi pointed out the 'multiple psychological and physical problems' including open-heart surgery, three surgeries on her left hand, acute eye disease, and depression that Fatemeh Sepehri is facing in prison, emphasizing that the law provides for the suspension of the execution of the sentence until the complete recovery of the sick prisoner in such cases. In part of his letter to Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the head of the judiciary, this lawyer described his efforts to halt the prison sentence due to Fatemeh Sepehri's 'critical condition' as 'fruitless'. A week earlier, Fatemeh Sepehri's mother and brother had informed about the deteriorating health of this prisoner, holding Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, responsible for her health and that of her two imprisoned brothers. Previously, the Iran Human Rights Organization expressed concern over the lack of access to medical services for political prisoners and called for the immediate release of Fatemeh Sepehri to undergo medical treatment outside of prison. Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam, the director of this organization, described Ms. Sepehri's imprisonment due to expressing her opinion as illegal and stated that 'deliberately depriving' her of appropriate medical services constitutes torture and endangers her life. Furthermore, the lawyer noted in his recent letter that the head of the first branch of the Revolutionary Court in Mashhad, Hadi Mansouri, sentenced Fatemeh Sepehri to 18 years in prison in an 'unfair' trial, of which 10 years are enforceable. Khosrow Ali-Kordi had previously stated in an interview with Voice of America that Fatemeh Sepehri's characteristics, including being veiled, a Quran researcher, and the wife of a martyr, alongside her open opposition to the Islamic Republic and the leader of the regime, are reasons for the significant pressures exerted by the government on her.
