FBI Investigating 'Iranian Cyber Influence' on US Election Campaigns

Following reports of cyber infiltration by Iranian hackers into US election campaigns, the FBI announced it is conducting investigations into the matter. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, in a brief statement released on Monday, August 13, confirmed that 'we can confirm that the FBI is looking into this matter' without providing further details. This announcement came two days after Donald Trump's campaign, the Republican presidential candidate, reported a breach of internal documents and pointed fingers at the Iranian government. After Politico reported receiving hundreds of pages of internal communications from Trump's campaign via an anonymous email, Stephen Chung, a spokesman for Trump's campaign, attributed the action to Iran. He did not provide specific evidence and merely stated that the Iranian government knows that Donald Trump, like during his four years in the White House, 'will stop their regime of terror.' According to Politico, the documents sent to the newspaper apparently included internal communications from a senior member of Trump's campaign, including detailed investigations into J.D. Vance, the current Republican candidate for the vice presidency. Trump's campaign attributed the hacking of its internal documents to Iran; Tehran denied the allegations. The Iranian representation at the United Nations immediately rejected Politico's report and the statements from Trump's campaign spokesman, claiming that the Iranian government has no motivation to interfere in the US presidential election. The Islamic Republic has been attempting for years to target some countries and institutions cybernetically around the world. Tehran has also threatened some officials from the former US government with retaliation, referencing Donald Trump's order to kill Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards. In addition to cyberattacks against Trump's campaign, US media outlets, including the Washington Post and the Associated Press, reported on Monday that the Biden-Harris campaign was also targeted by a cyberattack. According to these reports, three staff members of this campaign received phishing emails, but investigators have not yet found evidence of the hackers' success. Phishing refers to attempts to obtain information by impersonating an internet address, such as an email address or a website address. New reports about the possible attempts by Iranian-linked hackers come just days after Microsoft released a report detailing foreign attempts to interfere in the 2024 presidential election. Microsoft reported that Iranian hackers targeted US officials ahead of the elections. The report refers to a case in which an Iranian military information protection unit sent a phishing email to a senior official of one of the US presidential candidates' campaigns in June, using the email address of one of the former senior advisers of that campaign in this phishing tactic. Microsoft stated in its report that foreign attempts to influence the 2024 US elections began slowly but have steadily accelerated over the past six months, with Russia and Iran playing roles in this campaign. The report notes that 'Iran's cyber infiltration operations have been a consistent feature of at least the last three US election cycles.'
