Federal Jury in New York Finds Trump Liable in 'Sexual Assault' Case

A federal jury in New York on Tuesday found Donald Trump liable in a 'sexual assault' case involving a woman at a department store and ordered him to pay $5 million in damages. The plaintiff, E. Jean Carroll, alleged that Donald Trump sexually assaulted her in a department store dressing room twenty years before he became President of the United States, and then defamed her by calling her claims a hoax. Trump is facing several criminal investigations regarding his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and 'retaining classified documents' from his presidency at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. However, the allegations made by E. Jean Carroll were judged in a civil case, not a criminal one, meaning there is no risk of conviction or imprisonment for the 76-year-old Trump. The nine-member jury, consisting of six men and three women, had to unanimously decide whether there was enough evidence to believe Carroll's claims. Ms. Carroll alleged that Trump assaulted her in 1996 after an 'accidental encounter' at the luxury Bergdorf Goodman store, leading her to a dressing room in the women's lingerie section where he 'sexually assaulted' her. Two other women also testified that Trump had unexpectedly attacked them decades ago. Trump did not attend the court to hear Carroll's testimony. Donald Trump, who is now one of the Republican candidates for the upcoming presidential election, has claimed that E. Jean Carroll made the accusation to promote her memoir published four years ago.
