FIFA Delays Decision on Possible Suspension of Israel

The International Federation of Football (FIFA) has postponed its decision regarding the Palestinian Authority's request to suspend Israel from global football. The delay, announced on Thursday, July 19, has paved the way for the Israeli football team to participate in the Paris Olympic Games. FIFA was scheduled to make a decision on Saturday, July 21, during an extraordinary meeting regarding an independent legal assessment of the Palestinian Authority's proposal to expel Israel from international football competitions. FIFA stated that it has pushed back its timeline as the process requires more precision and further examination. According to FIFA, both Israeli and Palestinian sides have also needed more time to present their positions, and the federation will submit its independent report within a maximum of six weeks. The Palestinian Football Federation has long sought to expel Israel from global football competitions, but it reiterated its request this spring due to the Gaza war. Jibril Rajoub, the head of the Palestinian Football Federation, stated at the FIFA meeting in Bangkok this spring that Israeli teams have 'violated FIFA regulations.' Rajoub added that more than 250 Palestinian athletes have been killed in the Gaza war, and several stadiums have been damaged in Israeli bombings. The Palestinian Football Federation has argued that FIFA should apply the same suspension decision it made for Russia due to the military invasion of Ukraine to Israel as well. Shino Mushe Zuarts, head of the Israeli Football Association, stated at the Bangkok meeting that the Palestinian Authority pursues pessimistic political and hostile objectives against Israel to exclude the country from global arenas. Zuarts also mentioned that several Israeli athletes are among the hostages taken by Hamas in Gaza. Israel is grouped with Japan, Mali, and Paraguay in the Olympic football competitions, with its first match scheduled for July 25. The Olympics will begin on July 24, and Israel will only participate in the men's football section of this edition. Meanwhile, according to Israeli media, a special memorial ceremony for Israeli athletes killed in the 1972 Munich Olympics, held at every Olympic Games, has been moved to a closed and limited venue in Paris this time. The location of this ceremony will not be made public. According to Israel Hayom, this change is related to concerns stemming from support in France for Palestinians during the Gaza war. The Israeli Olympic Committee described this as a result of 'logistical changes.' Numerous protests and marches in support of Palestinians in Gaza were held in Paris and other French cities in the early months of the Gaza war. The Israeli internal security agency has been in contact with French authorities for some time to ensure the safety of Israeli athletes at the Paris Olympics, and the head of this agency traveled to France to review security measures for Israeli athletes. A case opened over fifty years ago: In the Munich Olympics 52 years ago, armed Palestinian forces affiliated with the 'Black September' group took several Israeli athletes hostage at their residence. In this incident, 11 Israeli athletes were killed.
