Finland Announces Deployment of NATO Ground Base Near Russian Border

Finland announced that it will establish a key NATO base less than 200 kilometers from its border with Russia, effectively sending a 'message' to its eastern neighbor. Finland joined NATO last year and abandoned decades of 'neutrality' following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. According to Antti Häkkänen, Finland's Minister of Defense, the new NATO headquarters will be for the Northern European land command unit in Mikkeli, one of the closest cities to Finland's 1,340-kilometer border with Russia. Häkkänen stated in a press conference, 'Finland is sending a message to Russia that we are a full member of NATO, and NATO has a very strong role in defending Finland.' He emphasized that with the establishment of this base, 'we achieve the best possible synergy between national defense management and NATO defense management,' adding that this headquarters will oversee the Atlantic and Arctic regions. After ten months of waiting, Finland officially became a member of NATO in April 2023. Finland shares approximately 1,300 kilometers of border with Russia, and its accession to NATO nearly doubled the borders of this Western military alliance with Russia.
