First Conviction in Case of Possible Russian Interference in US Elections

Alex van der Zwaan, a Dutch attorney who confessed to lying to federal agents in the United States, was sentenced to one month in prison, a $20,000 fine, and two months of supervised release. This is the first conviction in the investigation into possible Russian interference in the recent US presidential elections, led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Alex van der Zwaan, a 33-year-old lawyer and Dutch citizen, reportedly has close ties to very wealthy Russians. His father-in-law, German Khan, is listed as the 11th richest billionaire in Russia by Forbes magazine. The indictment against van der Zwaan accuses him of lying to investigators about his relationship with Rick Gates, a longtime business associate of Paul Manafort, the former campaign chairman for Donald Trump. Gates and Manafort were also indicted last year on charges including conspiracy to commit money laundering and are awaiting trial. According to the indictment, the prosecutor claims that van der Zwaan lied to federal investigators about his role in preparing a report on the trial of Yulia Tymoshenko, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine, who was a political rival of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, whose party employed Manafort and Gates at the time. The indictment details that van der Zwaan is accused of lying during an interview with FBI investigators on November 3, 2017. The lies pertain to his communications with Gates and another unnamed individual referred to as 'Person A.' Van der Zwaan is also accused of deleting emails that the special counsel's office had requested. Additionally, he is charged with providing false testimony regarding a phone conversation he had in September 2016 with Gates and 'Person A' about Tymoshenko's case, which he recorded confidentially. Reports indicate that the potential sentence for van der Zwaan could have been five years in prison, but the judge granted leniency due to his cooperation with the special counsel's office and its investigations. Van der Zwaan's lawyers requested the judge to limit his punishment to a fine and allow him to return to London by August, as his wife is pregnant, and he requested to be home for the birth of their child. Judge Amy Berman Jackson stated that given the charges and the fact that the defendant is a lawyer, a prison sentence is appropriate. She remarked, 'We are not discussing a traffic fine. The charge is lying to federal agents during a criminal investigation.' In addition to one month in prison, van der Zwaan was sentenced to pay a $20,000 fine and two months of supervised release. However, the judge indicated that once his prison term is completed, he would be allowed to retrieve his passport and leave the country. Robert Mueller's office, which is leading the investigation and is headed by a former FBI director and prosecutor, has not disclosed any information regarding van der Zwaan's cooperation or what information he provided to investigators. It has been reported that van der Zwaan remained silent during the court session and only briefly acknowledged his guilt and requested leniency, stating, 'What I did was wrong, and I apologize to the court for my actions.' He also asked for forgiveness from his family. Several US intelligence agencies had previously stated that Russia interfered in the 2016 US presidential election, attempting to alter the election results in favor of Donald Trump through hacking and false propaganda. Russia has denied these allegations. The US President has repeatedly emphasized that there was no collusion.
