Five Arrested Following Armed Attack on Passenger Bus

Following a shooting incident targeting a passenger bus on the route from Iranshahr to Shiraz, which resulted in one death, five individuals have been arrested. Nabi Baksh Davoodi, the governor of Iranshahr, announced the news of this armed attack and the arrest of suspects during an interview with the local website 'Asr Hamoon' on Friday, February 17. Mr. Davoodi stated that the attack occurred on Thursday evening within the boundaries of the 'Bamzan' county and reported that one person lost their life during the incident. Hossein Rahimi, the police chief of Sistan and Baluchestan province, also mentioned that the attack happened after an Afghan national boarded the bus. Mr. Rahimi added that after this Afghan national boarded, 'unknown individuals fired three shots at the bus, resulting in the death of this unauthorized foreign national.' The police chief identified the main perpetrator of the attack as an 'armed thief' and stated that 'four thieves' have been identified and arrested in connection with the incident. So far, media and security officials have not provided explanations regarding the attackers' motives for targeting the bus or the Afghan national. Homicides due to armed conflicts in Iran are considered one of the leading causes of death in the country. Typically, significant reports of armed conflicts are published in Iranian media, stemming from various reasons and contexts. The death of an 'armed thief' in a confrontation with police in 'Islamabad Gharb,' the arrest of a shooter in Kermanshah, and nighttime shootings by unknown individuals in 'Shush' are among the reports from Iranian media in the past 24 hours. On Wednesday, February 15, an armed conflict in Qom also resulted in one death and another injury. These conflicts occur amid ongoing police efforts to implement various plans for collecting firearms. In this context, on January 15 of this year, Mohammad Reza Moqimi, the head of the NAJA's Criminal Investigation Department, stated that 'the influx of weapons into the country is due to the insecurity of neighboring countries, and in some provinces, incentive plans are being implemented for individuals who surrender their weapons.' Mr. Moqimi added that 'carrying and possessing firearms is considered a crime under the law, and it is not possible to provide statistics on how many weapons currently exist in the country.'
