Five Arrested in Connection with Islamist Militants in Azerbaijan

Five citizens of Azerbaijan have been arrested by the country's National Security Ministry on charges of participating in terrorist operations in Iraq and Syria. The public relations office of the National Security Ministry of Azerbaijan announced on Friday, October 16, that these five citizens, who participated in military conflicts in Syria and Iraq, were detained by the ministry's forces. According to the ministry, Namig Quliyev, Khalid Haji Vardiev, Talib Ahmadov, Elvin Asgarov, and Anar Mahmudov violated the laws of these countries and Azerbaijan by joining armed groups such as the Islamic State (ISIS), Jabhat al-Nusra, and Jund al-Khalifa between 2012 and 2015. These individuals are accused under Azerbaijan's criminal laws of forming illegal armed groups, equipping them with weapons and ammunition, participating in terrorist activities, and inciting religious enmity under the guise of religious activities. The detainees are also accused of working to recruit Azerbaijani citizens and residents into illegal groups. The report states that the Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan has launched extensive investigations regarding these individuals. ISIS has been relatively successful in recruiting Azerbaijani citizens, with hundreds joining the group and fighting in Syria and Iraq. In recent months, Azerbaijani security forces have arrested dozens of citizens suspected of membership in religious extremist groups in various anti-terror operations. On September 21, the Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan reported the arrest of five citizens on charges of membership in terrorist groups. According to the ministry, these individuals were involved in procuring weapons and ammunition, including explosives, homemade bombs, and military equipment, intending to promote extremist religious ideologies within the country and engage in military training for participation in conflicts in Syria and Iraq. On September 2, as part of anti-terrorism efforts, five Azerbaijani citizens who had joined ISIS between 2013 and 2015 and participated in military conflicts in these countries were also arrested. Last October, the Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan arrested 26 citizens suspected of membership in ISIS and other illegal armed groups. In another operation in April this year, security forces arrested seven Azerbaijani citizens accused of being members of ISIS. Confessions from some of these individuals, published in Azerbaijani media, mention a significant number of Azerbaijanis who fight alongside their families with ISIS fighters and are killed.
