Flood of Twitter Messages Supporting the Freedom of Narges Mohammadi

On the fifteenth day of Narges Mohammadi's hunger strike, the human rights activist, internet users inside and outside Iran sent tens of thousands of tweets demanding her freedom and addressing her requests. This 'Twitter storm' became one of the top 10 global trends on Twitter after three hours. Narges Mohammadi, a human rights activist imprisoned in Iran, has been on a hunger strike for 15 days due to being deprived of the right to contact her children. A Twitter storm refers to a collection of tweets sent by thousands of users within a specific time frame with a particular message. For a hashtag to trend, tens of thousands of tweets must be published in a short period. Twitter is filtered in Iran; nonetheless, the International Human Rights Campaign in Iran reported that over 59% of the tweets were written by users inside the country. Taraneh Alidoosti, a cinema actress, also tweeted in support of Ms. Mohammadi's freedom. Taghi Rahmani, Narges Mohammadi's husband, published a joint letter from the Danish and Swedish Pen Associations to his wife, condemning her imprisonment, solitary confinement, and the lack of permission to contact her children, expressing concern about her hunger strike. These two associations promised Ms. Mohammadi that they would not spare efforts in 'making the world aware of the oppression and tyranny that you and your fellow prisoners are subjected to.' In this context, Narges Mohammadi has gone on a hunger strike 'to contact her children.' Amnesty International has warned about the continuation of Narges Mohammadi's hunger strike.
