Florida Governor Bans Pro-Palestinian Student Group Activities

The Florida university system in the United States, in collaboration with Governor Ron DeSantis, has ordered universities in the state to shut down a pro-Palestinian student organization. According to Reuters, with this order issued on Tuesday, October 24, Florida becomes the first state to declare this student group illegal, as its national leadership supports Hamas's attack on Israel. The Florida State University System announced that the chapters of the "Students for Justice in Palestine" (SJP) in the state must be disbanded due to "harmful support for terrorist groups" during university demonstrations. The United States, the European Union, and Japan have designated the Hamas militia, which is supported by the Islamic Republic, as a terrorist organization. Ray Rodriguez, the head of this university system, wrote in a memo to university leaders: "In consultation with DeSantis, the Governor of Florida, and due to the national SJP group's support for terrorism, the student chapters of this group must be deactivated." Rodriguez stated that SJP is active at least in two Florida universities. According to Instagram sites, SJP student organizations are active at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville and Florida State University in Tallahassee. Tensions between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian students have escalated following Hamas's attack on October 6 and the subsequent siege and bombing of Gaza by Israel, leading to incidents of harassment and assault at universities across the United States. Some U.S. university administrators criticized the group after SJP referred to Hamas's attack as a "historic victory for Palestinian resistance" and called for a "Day of Resistance" on November 21, along with demonstrations by its student chapters at over 200 colleges in the U.S. and Canada. DeSantis, who is a candidate for the U.S. presidency, has taken a hardline stance against Palestinians. He suggested that until Hamas releases hostages taken during its attack, civilians in Gaza should be deprived of water and electricity. The Florida university system stated that the ban on SJP was issued based on a "guidance" provided by this national group to its student chapters. This guidance referred to Hamas's attack as "resistance" and stated that "Palestinian students in exile are part of this movement." Rodriguez noted in his memo that SJP has presented itself as part of Hamas's attack, and under Florida law, "providing material support ... to a foreign organization that has been designated as terrorist is a crime."
