Following the Arrest of Several Hamas Members, Denmark Expanded Terrorism Investigations

The Danish prosecution announced on Friday, December 15, that the country has arrested two individuals and has initiated terrorism investigations against four others. This action by the Danish government coincides with the arrest of several Hamas members in the Netherlands and Germany. Officials from the three European countries announced on Thursday, December 14, that seven individuals, including four Hamas members, were arrested in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands on suspicion of planning attacks against Jewish institutions in Europe. These arrests come amid ongoing Israeli operations against Hamas in Gaza following the terrorist attack by Hamas on Israeli citizens on October 6. According to German prosecutors, three of these four individuals were arrested in Berlin, while the fourth was apprehended in the Netherlands. German prosecutors added that all four suspects have a history with Hamas and have close ties to the leadership of the military wing of this Iranian-backed Islamist group. Denmark did not mention any potential connections of the detainees to Hamas. According to the Associated Press, by court order, the two individuals arrested in Denmark will remain in temporary custody until January 8. Danish media identified them as a 50-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman. The Danish intelligence agency reported on Thursday the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of planning 'a terrorist act.' Prosecutor Anders Larsen stated early Friday, after a lengthy preliminary court session in Copenhagen, that one of the detainees, identified by Danish media as a 29-year-old man, was released. Larsen also announced the issuance of a default arrest warrant for four other individuals. According to the report, the identities of none of the suspects have been disclosed, and the preliminary court was held behind closed doors. Earlier, Ylva Johansson, the European Union's Commissioner for Home Affairs, warned that Europe faces a 'significant risk of terrorist attacks' during the Christmas holidays amid the war between Israel and Hamas. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, at an EU meeting in Brussels, referred to the arrests in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, stating that the overall security picture in Europe is concerning. In a press conference, she mentioned the recent missile attacks by Iranian-backed Houthis on commercial ships in the Red Sea, saying, 'Each of these attacks is serious and concerning on its own, but they all represent a larger picture that we are facing a more serious and complex threat.
