Following the Conviction of Mashallah Karami, His Former Lawyer Also Sentenced to Imprisonment

Amirhossein Koohkan, a lawyer and member of the Central Bar Association, has been sentenced to six years in prison by the Second Branch of the Revolutionary Court in Karaj. He represented the case of Mashallah Karami, the father of Mohammad Mehdi Karami, one of the victims of the nationwide protests in Iran in 2022. According to reports published on social media, the charges against this lawyer have not yet been officially announced. This news came just hours after another lawyer in Mashallah Karami's case announced the six-year prison sentence for his client. Ali Sharifzadeh Ardekani announced on Saturday that the judiciary of the Islamic Republic has issued a six-year prison sentence for this grieving father. Mohammad Mehdi Karami, his son, was an athlete and protester who was executed after his arrest. He was detained during the nationwide protests of 2022 following his participation in the memorial ceremony for Hadis Najafi and Parsa Rezadoost, two deceased protesters. Mohammad Mehdi Karami was executed at dawn on January 7 of that year along with Mohammad Hosseini in the case known as the 'murder of Basij member Rouhollah Ajamian.' The government's pressure on lawyers and legal professionals has increased following the nationwide protests after the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police. Mashallah Karami, the grieving father, was sentenced to six years in prison and confiscation of property by the Islamic Revolutionary Court. The pressure on the families of the victims continues; the detention of Farzad Moazemi Goudarzi has been extended for another month. The lawyer for Mashallah Karami stated that his client finally had a 'chance to defend himself' in court. A human rights organization reported the renewed detention of the grieving father, Reza Lotfi. Five charges have been filed against Mashallah Karami, the grieving father, in court.
