Following the sudden death of Admiral Scott Stearney, the commander of the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, the U.S. Department of Defense, Pentagon, has introduced Admiral James Malloy as his replacement. The New York Times reported on Thursday that Admiral James Malloy, who was serving as the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Plans and Strategy at the Pentagon, has headed to Bahrain. According to the report, Admiral Malloy has previously operated in various regions of the Middle East, including Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. Reports indicate that Admiral Malloy was stationed at the U.S. Fifth Fleet's location in Bahrain earlier this week and is awaiting formal introduction as the commander of this fleet. Admiral Malloy's command of the U.S. Fifth Fleet requires confirmation from the U.S. Senate. The body of Admiral Scott Stearney was found on Saturday at his residence in Bahrain. U.S. and Bahraini officials have ruled out his death as a result of crime, and some reports suggest that he apparently committed suicide. However, Pentagon officials have not yet officially commented on the death of Admiral Scott Stearney. Reports indicate that Stearney, a Chicago resident, graduated in 1982 with a degree in economics from the University of Notre Dame and joined the Navy in the same year. He began his career in the U.S. Navy as a pilot in 1984. Admiral Stearney was appointed as the commander of the U.S. Fifth Fleet and coalition naval forces in the region in May of this year, overseeing more than 20,000 personnel. The U.S. Fifth Fleet is responsible for securing American interests in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, and parts of the Indian Ocean.
