Forest Fires in Southern Lebanon Resulting from Gunfire Exchange Between Israel and Hezbollah

The United Nations peacekeeping forces stationed in Lebanon, UNIFIL, announced on Thursday, October 26, that they are cooperating with Lebanese authorities to extinguish forest fires that have spread several kilometers in southern Lebanon following the outbreak of gunfire along the Lebanon-Israel border. Hezbollah, part of a regional coalition supported by the Iranian government, has been engaged in daily exchanges of fire with Israeli forces along the border since the onset of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7. According to Reuters, over 40 Hezbollah fighters have been killed in border areas, and the Israeli army reports that at least seven of its soldiers have lost their lives in this conflict. Andrea Tenenti, a spokesperson for UNIFIL, told Reuters that the Lebanese Civil Defense firefighting teams are working to extinguish the fires. He added that strong winds and a heatwave, combined with mined lands, have increased the risk of fire spreading. Tenenti stated, 'These fires are occurring in mined fields, complicating efforts to extinguish them.' According to the UNIFIL spokesperson, although the fires have so far affected deserted and uninhabited areas, they are close to border villages and olive orchards. The recent clashes between Israel and Hezbollah began following the October 7 attack by Hamas militants on Israel, which was followed by Israeli airstrikes on Hamas positions in Gaza.
