Former Argentine Prosecutor's Family: Alberto Nisman Was Murdered

The former wife of the late Argentine prosecutor stated on Thursday that, based on independent criminal investigations, Alberto Nisman was murdered. According to Reuters, the criminal investigation and autopsy report of Mr. Nisman have not yet been released by the government, but some documents published by the Argentine prosecutor's office suggest that Mr. Nisman committed suicide. Sandra Arguello Salgado, Mr. Nisman's ex-wife, said at a press conference on March 5: 'Nisman did not have an accident and did not commit suicide. He was killed.' Associated Press also reported from this press conference, quoting Mr. Nisman's ex-wife: 'It is clear that he was murdered, and nothing else is true.' Alberto Nisman was found dead in his apartment with a bullet wound to his head, just four days after accusing Argentine President Cristina Fernández of attempting to obstruct the investigation into the AMIA case. Ms. Salgado, who is also a judge, announced that she has the results of independent criminal investigations from a team but refused to provide details of these investigations to reporters. Mr. Nisman's ex-wife stated that another independent team conducted their own autopsy and also reviewed and collected video, photographic, and other evidence. According to Reuters, Mr. Nisman was a father of two and was 52 years old at the time of his death. The case of Mr. Nisman's death has led to numerous conspiracy theories in Argentina, some of which blame the country's president for the incident. On March 4, the Argentine government published a one-page statement in local newspapers emphasizing that the delayed agreement with Iran remains the best way to clarify the facts surrounding the deadly bombing in 1994 at the Jewish center in Buenos Aires. A federal court in Argentina suspended a controversial agreement last year that allowed its agents to interrogate Iranian suspects. The Iranian government denies involvement in this bombing, which left 85 victims, and also refuses to extradite its citizens. Since the beginning of this year and the suspicious death of Alberto Nisman, a well-known Argentine prosecutor, investigations into the AMIA bombing case have once again attracted public attention in the country.
