Former CIA Chief Fined

General David Petraeus, the former head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), has been fined $100,000 for mishandling classified information and will be under supervision for two years, avoiding prison time. The four-star retired general admitted to illegally removing classified documents from his workplace during his first court session in North Carolina in April. According to Reuters, Judge David Kessler increased the proposed $40,000 fine to the maximum of $100,000, stating it needed to be punitive and reflective of the seriousness of the crime. Following the initial charges against the former CIA chief, the name of Paula Broadwell, his mistress, was mentioned as someone who had access to some of his classified emails. Ms. Broadwell has written a book about the life of this American general. David Petraeus led the CIA until 2012, after which he was succeeded by John Brennan. His resignation came after reports of his relationship with Ms. Broadwell were published. On May 3, Petraeus told reporters, 'Today marks the end of a two-and-a-half-year difficult test that stemmed from my mistakes.' He added, 'As I have done before, I once again apologize to my loved ones and many others.' The judge noted that Mr. Petraeus's actions were in 'complete contradiction' to nearly four decades of his public service.
