Former Leader of Far-Right Group 'Proud Boys' Sentenced to 22 Years in Prison

Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the far-right group 'Proud Boys', was sentenced to 22 years in prison by a federal court in the United States for 'conspiracy' to disrupt the certification of the 2020 U.S. presidential election results and for his role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. According to Reuters, U.S. Federal Judge Timothy Kelly issued the 22-year sentence on Tuesday, marking the longest sentence in this case to date, despite Tarrio's absence in Washington. Simultaneously, Tarrio was convicted of 'planning a riot at the Capitol' with the aim of 'disrupting the certification of Joe Biden's victory' in the presidential election. Federal prosecutors argued that Tarrio still has connections with the 'Proud Boys' group and closely monitors their activities, identifying him as an 'influential figure' within the 'Proud Boys'. Based on this report, Enrique Tarrio expressed remorse for his actions in court, calling the events of January 6 a 'national embarrassment'. So far, over 1,100 individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack on the Capitol, with more than 630 admitting their guilt and at least 110 being convicted in court. Earlier, Voice of America published the results of a new poll on July 9, showing that about half of Americans believe former President Donald Trump should be found guilty for his role in the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. The Associated Press-NORC poll indicates that 48% of American adults believe Trump should be found guilty, while 31% oppose this view. 20% of respondents stated they do not have enough information to express an opinion. Fifty-eight percent believe Trump is responsible for the events that occurred that day. Joe Biden, the U.S. President and the winning candidate of the November 2020 election, described the attack on the Capitol as a 'clear violation of the Constitution' and stated, 'This was a blatant and gross violation of the Constitution. In my opinion, these men and women broke the law and attempted to overturn the result of an election.' The January 6 committee has asked the Department of Justice to prosecute Donald Trump.
