Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Sentenced to 14 Years in Land Corruption Case

A corruption court in Pakistan sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to 14 years in prison. The ruling was issued on Friday, January 18, at a military prison in Rawalpindi, where Imran Khan has been held since the summer of two years ago. This case, related to allegations of financial corruption during Imran Khan's premiership from 2018 to 2022, is the largest case brought against him to date. The 72-year-old Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were accused of receiving land as a gift from a property developer in exchange for illegal favors. Bushra Bibi, who was free on bail at the time of the ruling, was arrested following the conviction. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, led by Imran Khan, described the ruling as 'baseless' and stated, 'The Trust Al-Qadir case against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi lacks any legal basis.' This conviction is a significant blow to Imran Khan and his party following their unexpected success in the 2024 general elections. In that election, candidates from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, who participated as independents, won the most seats but failed to secure the majority needed to form a government. Imran Khan faces dozens of legal cases, including allegations of financial corruption, abuse of power, and incitement to violence against the government. However, he has either been acquitted or had the rulings against him suspended in most cases so far. The only case still pending relates to accusations of inciting his supporters to attack military facilities on May 9 of last year, which occurred after his arrest and led to several violent protests by his supporters. Imran Khan has been tried in prison for security reasons.
