Former Trump Campaign Chairman Denies Charges and Will Stand Trial

Paul Manafort, former chairman of Donald Trump's campaign, on Wednesday, March 9, denied new charges against him related to the Russia interference case in the 2016 election and will therefore stand trial in September. According to Reuters, Robert Mueller, the special counsel of the Justice Department overseeing the investigation, has increased pressure on Manafort, who has stated he will not cooperate with the investigation. Rick Gates, Manafort's business partner and also a senior official in Trump's campaign, decided to cooperate with the investigation last week by accepting charges. Manafort faces two indictments for a series of charges including money laundering, providing false tax documents, bank fraud, and failing to register lobbying activities in the U.S. on behalf of the former pro-Russian government in Ukraine. It is expected that Manafort's trial may continue until November, coinciding with the U.S. midterm elections, and this issue will become a topic of news as Republicans will try to maintain their majority in U.S. legislatures. The prosecution claims that Trump's former advisor, with Gates' help, laundered over $30 million and obtained loans through bank fraud. The prosecution adds that both used funds accumulated in secret accounts abroad to sustain a lavish lifestyle. None of the charges against the two are related to the potential Russian interference in the 2016 election or any possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia. Robert Mueller, who was appointed last year by the Justice Department to lead the investigation into Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election, has extensive powers and can investigate any other crimes that may come to light during the investigation. U.S. security agencies concluded in January 2017 that Russia attempted to influence the election results in favor of Donald Trump through actions such as hacking the emails of senior Democratic Party officials and spreading fake news and biased propaganda on social media. The Russian government has always denied these allegations, and Donald Trump has also stated that there was no collusion between his campaign and Russian agents, denying reports regarding attempts to obstruct Robert Mueller's investigations. During the latter part of that period, both were working for Donald Trump's campaign. The indictments against Paul Manafort are divided into two parts, each of which will be examined in separate courts. The case related to money laundering and unregistered lobbying activities on behalf of the former Ukrainian government will be examined in federal court in Washington, while the case related to bank and tax fraud will be examined in a court in Virginia. The usual practice of the U.S. judicial system is to review all charges in one case and in one court.
