The American hostages, who were held for 444 days, were not released until Reagan's inauguration, marking a dark point in Carter's presidential legacy. In his book 'A Full Life,' Carter wrote that this crisis left him vulnerable to attacks from those who labeled him 'ineffective.' He described his last year in the White House as 'the most stressful and unpleasant' period of his life. US President Joe Biden stated in a live televised address from the White House on Sunday evening that Jimmy Carter dedicated his life to others and emphasized that Carter's life is measured by his actions, not his words, declaring that the world has lost an extraordinary leader. Biden announced that the date for Jimmy Carter's official funeral in Washington, D.C., will be January 9, 2025, and said that this day will be a national day of mourning, ordering US flags to be flown at half-staff.
