Former US Secretary of State Supports Nuclear Agreement

Colin Powell, the former Secretary of State of the United States during George W. Bush's presidency, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Jewish member of the US House of Representatives, have expressed their support for the nuclear agreement. On September 6, Mr. Powell described the nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, reached on July 14, as a 'good agreement' during a program on NBC. According to the Associated Press, the former Secretary of State stated that the agreement has brought Iran's nuclear program to a point where the likelihood of producing a nuclear bomb for use against Israel or other countries is significantly reduced, hence it is a 'good agreement.' Tehran has consistently emphasized that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes. However, during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's presidency, the issue was brought before the UN Security Council, leading to extensive international and unilateral sanctions against Iran due to Tehran's handling of the situation. Another supporter of the nuclear agreement is Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a member of the House of Representatives and chair of the Democratic National Committee. Ms. Schultz stated that deciding to endorse the nuclear agreement was the hardest decision she has made in her 23 years as a representative. In an article published by the Miami Herald, she wrote that the agreement creates the 'greatest chance' for the security of the United States, Israel, and other allies. In addition to the House of Representatives, the number of supporters of the nuclear agreement in the US Senate has also reached 38. Just a few days ago, when this number surpassed 34 representatives, which is more than one-third of the representatives, the possibility of a presidential veto against it became practically feasible.
