Founder of Hezbollah Lebanon Calls for Trial and Punishment of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic

Subhi al-Tufayli, the founder and first Secretary-General of Hezbollah Lebanon, on Thursday, October 5, called for the trial and potential execution of Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, due to the explosion of the group's pager devices in Lebanon and Syria. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, al-Tufayli stated that Khamenei, the leaders of Hezbollah Lebanon, and all their associates share responsibility for the 'failure' resulting from the explosion of the pagers and radios of this militia group. The explosions of these devices left hundreds dead and injured among Hezbollah members in Lebanon and Syria over two days. Al-Tufayli told his over five thousand subscribers that all those responsible for this failure should be tried in court, the guilty should be punished, and the criminals should be executed. This Shia cleric, who served as the first Secretary-General of Hezbollah Lebanon from 1989 to 1991, further added that corruption in Iran has expanded during Khamenei's leadership and blamed him as an 'autocrat' for the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the former leader of Hamas. Haniyeh was recently killed in an explosion in Tehran, believed to have been carried out by Israel, which has not commented on the matter. Al-Tufayli pointed out that the main failure in the explosion of the pager devices lies with Khamenei in Tehran. He demanded a real, transparent, and accurate trial of Khamenei, the leaders of Hezbollah Lebanon, their associates, and all those involved in this failure, punishment for the guilty, and execution for the criminals. Since his expulsion from Hezbollah Lebanon, al-Tufayli has become a fierce critic of the leadership of this militia group and its obedience to the Islamic Republic. Abbas al-Mousawi replaced al-Tufayli as Secretary-General of Hezbollah Lebanon in 1991 but was killed by Israel a year later, paving the way for Hassan Nasrallah's rise in the leadership structure of this group. With close ties to Tehran, Nasrallah transformed Hezbollah Lebanon into one of the Islamic Republic's proxy groups. Reuters reported, citing 'two intelligence sources,' that Hezbollah Lebanon was distributing these pagers among its members just hours before the explosions on Tuesday, September 17. The report noted that given the ongoing examination and cleaning of electronic devices to eliminate potential threats, the distribution of these pagers among group members indicates that Hezbollah was confident in the security of the devices. During a seemingly coordinated attack on Tuesday, September 17, thousands of 'Gold Apollo' branded pagers exploded across Hezbollah's bases in southern Lebanon, the suburbs of Beirut, and the eastern Bekaa Valley. On Wednesday, September 18, hundreds of Hezbollah's handheld radios also exploded. A Western security source told Reuters that Israel's secret military intelligence unit '8200' participated in this operation. A Lebanese source informed Reuters that the batteries of Hezbollah members' radios were coated with a powerful explosive mixture known as 'PETN.' The news agency reported that more than three grams of explosives were embedded in the pagers, which Hezbollah was unaware of despite examining these devices.
