Four Injured in Attack on UN Peacekeeping Forces in Southern Lebanon

The United Nations peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, reported on Saturday, April 1, that three peacekeepers and their translator were injured following an explosion in southern Lebanon. According to a statement from UNIFIL, the source of the explosion, which occurred during the patrol of UN peacekeepers, is under investigation. In part of its statement, UNIFIL described targeting peacekeepers as 'unacceptable' and announced the transfer of the injured to a hospital. 'Two security sources' told Reuters that the attack was carried out by Israel outside the border town of 'Rmeish' in Lebanon. However, the Israeli army denied any involvement in the explosion, adding, 'Contrary to reports, the Israel Defense Forces did not attack the UNIFIL vehicle in the Rmeish area.' Meanwhile, Najib Mikati, the caretaker Prime Minister of Lebanon, condemned the 'targeting' of UN forces in southern Lebanon during a conversation with the head of UNIFIL. The mayor of Rmeish also stated that he spoke with the injured UNIFIL translator and that his condition is stable. The Norwegian Ministry of Defense announced in a statement that one of the three injured peacekeepers is a citizen of this country. Lebanese media also reported that the other two peacekeepers are citizens of Chile and Australia. The United Nations peacekeeping force and the technical and unarmed observers of this organization are stationed to monitor hostilities along the border line between Lebanon and Israel known as the 'Blue Line' in southern Lebanon. Since the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 against Israel, Hezbollah Lebanon, as the most important proxy group of the Islamic Republic in the region, has been carrying out daily attacks against the positions of the Israeli army in the north of the country and also against Israeli civilians stationed near the common border with Lebanon. In response, Israel has intensified the frequency and intensity of its attacks against Hezbollah positions and infrastructure in Lebanon and Syria, and contrary to its usual practice, has also claimed responsibility for several attacks in Syria. Yoav Gallant, the Israeli Minister of Defense, announced on Friday that 320 Hezbollah members have been killed in recent months of conflict, and this group will pay for any actions taken against Israel. The Israeli army has repeatedly warned that if Hezbollah does not stop its attacks and withdraw from border areas and instead enters into a broader war with Israel, the entire country of Lebanon may be affected by the consequences of such a war. Despite the efforts of the United States and other countries to end the escalating conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as repeated warnings from Israel to Hezbollah, this proxy force of the Islamic Republic states that it will stop its attacks on Israel only if the war against Hamas ends. Hamas, which is supported by the Islamic Republic, is listed as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Canada, Japan, and several other countries around the world. Airstrikes attributed to Israel against Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Revolutionary Guards in Syria have resulted in 52 casualties in the attack on military positions at Aleppo airport. The Israeli Minister of Defense stated that they will target Hezbollah in Beirut, Damascus, and any other distant locations. The Israeli army claims that a senior member of Hezbollah's missile unit was killed in a drone attack. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that five 'Syrian militants belonging to Hezbollah' were injured in an Israeli attack on the outskirts of Damascus. A rocket attack by Hezbollah on northern Israel resulted in at least one death.
