Four Killed in Turkey's Army Clash with PKK Militants in Northern Iraq

Clashes between militants affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Turkish army in northern Iraq have resulted in four deaths. Three of the deceased are militants, and the fourth is a Turkish soldier. A Reuters report citing security sources in Turkey indicates that this incident occurred on Thursday evening in the Kani Masi area of Duhok, near the Iraq-Turkey border, and four Turkish soldiers were also injured during the clashes. The report notes that Turkish military forces have been stationed in areas of northern Iraq, including Kani Masi, for several years to prevent PKK militants from crossing the border into Turkey. Turkey's military presence in northern Iraq has previously faced objections from Iraqi officials, but the clashes occurred while Turkish and Iraqi forces were conducting a joint military exercise in northern Iraq. This exercise is described as part of the cooperation between the two countries in response to the Kurdish region of Iraq's independence referendum. Some PKK-affiliated forces are based in the mountainous regions of northern Iraq, a group that is designated as terrorist by the Turkish government, the U.S., and the EU. Reuters reminds that Turkish Air Force fighter jets have intermittently targeted PKK positions in northern Iraq, but ground clashes with the group's militants in Iraqi territory have rarely occurred. On Monday, October 3, the Turkish army published details on its official website regarding a new airstrike against PKK positions, mentioning the destruction of PKK military camps in the Zab and Avashin Basyan regions of Iraq, promising that the results of this operation would be released soon. The PKK began its separatist insurgency over three decades ago in 1984, and during this time, more than 40,000 people have been killed in armed conflicts between this group and the Turkish government.
