Four Militants Killed in Israeli Drone Strike on Vehicle Near Syria-Lebanon Border

Four militants affiliated with Iranian-backed groups were killed on Wednesday in an Israeli airstrike targeting a vehicle near the Syria-Lebanon border. Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing two security sources, that the drone strike hit a vehicle passing through a Syrian checkpoint near the border with Lebanon on Wednesday, August 7, resulting in the deaths of three Palestinian militants and one member of Hezbollah. According to the Israeli army, the strike killed Fares Qassem, a key figure in the operational wing of the militant group 'Islamic Jihad' and responsible for operational plans in Syria and Lebanon. Islamic Jihad is supported by the Iranian government. The Israeli army stated that Fares Qassem played a central role in recruiting and hiring Palestinians into Hezbollah to carry out attacks against Israel from Lebanese territory. The Israeli army did not provide details but indicated that several other Islamic Jihad militants traveling from Syria to Lebanon were also killed in the strike. In recent months, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, and other armed groups have carried out numerous rocket and drone attacks against Israel. These groups have strong ties with the governments of Iran and Syria, moving fighters and weapons across the Syria-Lebanon border. Earlier, Palestinian Authority officials announced on Wednesday that at least nine people were killed in a large-scale operation by Israeli forces involving helicopters and drones in the cities of 'Jenin' and 'Tulkarem' and several other areas in the West Bank. According to Reuters, this operation by the Israeli army is considered one of the largest attacks in recent months in the West Bank, following smaller attacks in recent weeks. The Israeli army's operations in the West Bank aim to confront Palestinian militant groups, including Hamas, which is supported by the Iranian government. Reuters noted that the operations in the West Bank occurred while Israeli forces were engaged with Hamas militants in Gaza and facing escalating tensions with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. The war in Gaza began after a terrorist attack by Hamas militants and other Palestinian groups on Israel on October 7, 2023. Following this attack, Palestinian militants killed at least 1,200 people, most of whom were civilians, and took over 250 hostages to Gaza. After the Israeli army's operations in Gaza aimed at destroying Hamas, Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel in support of this group, leading to border clashes. Meanwhile, Nadav Shoshani, a spokesman for the Israeli army, said that Wednesday's operation followed a significant increase in militant activities in recent months, with over 150 attacks involving gunfire or explosives from the Tulkarem and Jenin areas. He stated that based on the army's assessment, there is an 'immediate threat' to civilians, noting that Israeli forces' operations are 'part of a broader strategy aimed at neutralizing attacks.' Nadav Shoshani told reporters that this terrorist threat in the West Bank is not new, 'it did not start yesterday and will not end tomorrow.' Meanwhile, Israel Katz, Israel's foreign minister, wrote on social media platform 'X' that the Israeli army has launched extensive operations in refugee camps in Jenin and Tulkarem since Tuesday night, September 6, to 'neutralize Islamic-Iranian terrorist infrastructures' established there. Mr. Katz accused the Iranian government of trying to create a terrorist front against Israel in the West Bank based on the Gaza and Lebanon model by financing and arming terrorists and smuggling weapons from Jordan. The foreign minister emphasized that it is necessary to address the 'terrorist infrastructure threat in Gaza, including the temporary evacuation of Palestinian residents,' and to take 'necessary next steps.'
