Four Pakistanis Killed by Iranian Forces in Pakistani Territory

Pakistani officials announced that four Pakistani citizens were killed and two others injured by Iranian gunfire in the Balochistan province of Pakistan. According to Umar Jamali, the deputy commissioner of the Washuk area in Balochistan, the shootings occurred near the Iran-Pakistan border in the Washuk region. Naeem Omrani, another deputy commissioner in the Washuk area, stated that Pakistani authorities are investigating the incident to determine the reasons behind the shootings. Following unprecedented military exchanges between Iran and Pakistan in late January, former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi visited Pakistan for three days in early May to improve relations between the two neighboring countries. Raisi's visit was seen as a fundamental step towards normalizing relations between Tehran and Islamabad. Iran and Pakistan have had tense relations, but the missile attacks in late January marked the most serious tensions between the two countries in years, prompting Pakistan to recall its ambassador from Tehran and deny the Iranian ambassador's return to Islamabad, as well as suspending all high-level diplomatic and commercial interactions. However, rapid diplomatic efforts following these attacks provided assurance to both sides that they respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Tehran and Islamabad also committed to expanding their security cooperation, especially in border areas that have been scenes of unrest over the years. Islamabad announced that it targeted the bases of the separatist groups 'Baloch Liberation Front' and 'Baloch Liberation Army', while Tehran stated it attacked the militant group Jaish al-Adl. These militant groups operate in an area that includes Balochistan province in southwestern Pakistan and Sistan and Baluchestan province in southeastern Iran. Both regions are troubled, mineral-rich, and largely underdeveloped.
