France Calls for Halt to Executions in Iran

The French government has strongly condemned the acceleration of executions by the Islamic Republic's government in Iran and has called for an end to this trend. According to AFP, on Thursday, February 21, the government of France condemned, in the strongest terms, the increase in the number of executions in Iran, which has reached 975 in 2024, and urged the Islamic Republic's officials to stop carrying out death sentences. The French Foreign Ministry stated: 'These executions are a symbol of the ruthless repression against all those who dare to express their legitimate demands for freedom.' A spokesperson for the French diplomatic service reminded that Paris opposes the death penalty 'anywhere in the world and under any circumstances,' and called on the Islamic Republic to immediately end this practice. The increase in executions by the Islamic Republic's judicial authorities has been repeatedly reported by human rights organizations. According to members of the human rights campaign 'Tuesdays Against the Death Penalty,' Islamic Republic officials executed at least 62 individuals, including two women, in various prisons across Iran just in the month of Bahman. Additionally, protests have been reported in various cities, including Frankfurt and Hamburg, against the death penalty and in support of political prisoners.
