France Imposes Sanctions on Yahya Sinwar, Hamas Leader in Gaza

France has imposed sanctions on Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, and ordered his assets to be frozen. According to Reuters, last month France implemented national-level sanctions against Mohammed Deif, the commander of Hamas's armed wing, and his deputy Marwan Issa. Diplomats have stated that France is working with its partners to impose sanctions on Hamas members and its financial network at the European Union level. Deif, Issa, and Sinwar are at the top of a list that Israel claims must be killed. The 61-year-old Sinwar, along with the 58-year-old Deif and Issa, form a three-member military council at the helm of Hamas that designed and executed the attack on October 7. This attack, the deadliest in Israel's 75-year history, resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and around 240 hostages taken. Since the war with Hamas began on October 7, Israeli officials have emphasized the need to destroy this group. The United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Israel, and several other countries have listed the Iran-backed militant group Hamas as a terrorist organization. Concurrently, Israel has showcased various images of the deployment of Hamas 'terrorists' and military equipment in underground tunnels and their connections to public places such as schools and hospitals during its ground assault in northern Gaza.
