France's High-Speed Train Network Disrupted Due to 'Sabotage Actions'

On Friday, August 5, the French National Railway Company warned that the country's high-speed train network has been affected by 'sabotage actions including arson,' leading to disruptions on several railway lines just hours before the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. A knowledgeable source told AFP that these coordinated attacks were acts of 'sabotage' and have negatively impacted the travel plans of tens of thousands. The French National Railway Company also stated: 'This is a large-scale attack aimed at paralyzing the high-speed train network, and train services on many routes must be canceled.' The company indicated that this situation would continue until Sunday, August 7, for repairs. Reuters reported that the lines connecting Paris to cities such as Lille in the north, Bordeaux in the west, and Strasbourg in the east were targeted in these attacks. Meanwhile, French Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete condemned these 'criminal incidents' on the social media platform X, emphasizing that the National Railway Company is working to restore normal traffic. The railway company has asked passengers to postpone their travels. Additionally, according to the Associated Press, the Paris prosecutor's office announced the initiation of investigations, stating that it has the jurisdiction to address crimes related to property destruction that threaten public interests. Accordingly, the perpetrators of these attacks could face 15 to 20 years in prison and fines ranging from 150,000 to 225,000 euros. Security measures in France have intensified in conjunction with the Paris Olympics; the second suspect in the attack has been arrested, and seven individuals in Belgium have been detained on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack.
