Francis Ford Coppola Returns to Cannes with 'Megalopolis'

Francis Ford Coppola, the renowned American filmmaker, will present another film at the Cannes Film Festival nearly fifty years after winning the Palme d'Or. His new film, titled 'Megalopolis', will be unveiled for the first time at Cannes, a project he has financed with his personal funds. 'Megalopolis' was screened on Tuesday, April 10, in a private session for several executives from major studios and film distributors. Following this private screening, news of 'Megalopolis' being showcased at the 77th Cannes Film Festival was published in art journals. Although the festival has not yet officially confirmed the screening of 'Megalopolis', the Associated Press reported this based on an informed source. Thierry Frémaux, the festival director, will announce the names of films in the competitive section of the event on Friday. He mentioned last week to the arts site 'Deadline' that he hopes 'Megalopolis' will make it to this year's festival. The festival director praised Francis Ford Coppola, describing 'Megalopolis' as the filmmaker's favorite project, 'which he has created independently with his own funding.' Thierry Frémaux characterized the return of this iconic director to Cannes as an 'honor' for the film festival. The 85-year-old Coppola has won two Palme d'Or awards for 'Apocalypse Now' and 'The Conversation'. He began writing the screenplay for 'Megalopolis' in the 1980s and it is reported that the film was made with a budget of $120 million, depicting the reconstruction of a devastated metropolis. The cast of 'Megalopolis' includes Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, and Dustin Hoffman. The Cannes Film Festival will begin in late May in France. According to the announced schedule, this year's honorary Palme d'Or will be awarded to George Lucas, the renowned American filmmaker.
