French Parliament Votes in Favor of an Independent Palestinian State

On Tuesday, December 2, representatives of the French Parliament voted in favor of the existence of an independent Palestinian state, an action that Israel responded to by emphasizing that it would harm efforts to establish peace. According to Agence France-Presse, 339 members of the French Parliament voted positively, while 151 voted negatively, urging the French government to recognize the state of Palestine in order to end the conflict and battles in the Middle East. However, this vote is merely symbolic and cannot obligate the French government to implement such a plan. Nevertheless, France joins countries like Britain and Spain, whose parliaments have previously voted similarly regarding an independent Palestinian state. The Israeli embassy in Paris immediately reacted to this action by stating in a statement that Tel Aviv believes the vote of the French Parliament 'reduces the likelihood of reaching an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.' The statement emphasizes that a solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians can only be achieved when 'the parties engage in honest and direct dialogue' and that reaching a solution is fundamentally impossible with unilateral actions from either side or the involvement of a third party. On the other hand, Palestinian leadership expressed gratitude for the French Parliament's action and requested Paris to implement the parliament's vote. Previously, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to the French Parliament's decision to vote on Palestine as a major mistake. Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius warned before the vote that if international mediation between Israel and the Palestinians fails, France would recognize an independent Palestinian state. Palestinian officials state that 135 countries around the world have recognized Palestine as a state so far. Sweden is considered the first EU member to recognize the existence of an independent Palestinian state. In this context, Israel approved the construction of '500 housing units' in East Jerusalem, while the new EU foreign policy chief stated that a Palestinian state must be established. Palestine's request for a vote in the Security Council has been suspended, and the Arab League is taking the plan to establish a Palestinian state to the Security Council.
