Fuel Tanker Explosion in Pakistan Leaves Over 150 Dead and 140 Injured

At least 153 people were killed due to the overturning and explosion of a fuel tanker in Pakistan. According to the Associated Press, this incident occurred on Sunday, July 4, on the road from Karachi to Lahore. Local official Mohammad Baqir reported that approximately 140 others were injured as a result of the tanker overturning and catching fire, with 40 of them in critical condition. Baqir expects the death toll to rise. Local Pakistani networks have broadcast heartbreaking scenes of victims and the efforts of rescue teams to assist those affected. According to Rana Mohammad Saleem, a local official in Bahawalpur, Punjab, after a mosque loudspeaker announced that fuel was leaking from the overturned tanker nearby, people rushed to the site with containers to collect fuel. The French news agency reported that 10 minutes after people arrived to gather fuel, the tanker exploded. Some reports indicate that an individual at the scene was lighting a cigarette when the explosion occurred. Meanwhile, police stated that upon learning of the incident, they immediately blocked the highway but could not prevent the local people's rush to collect fuel. Witnesses reported that nearly 30 motorcycles that had brought people to the scene were burned in the fire, along with eight vehicles. Many bodies are unidentifiable due to severe burns and will require DNA testing for identification.
