G7 Defense Ministers Meeting; Concern Over Attacks on Peacekeeping Forces in Lebanon and Commitment to Support Ukraine

On Saturday, G7 defense ministers met amid several military crises worldwide, expressing concern over escalating conflicts in Lebanon and emphasizing "strong support" for Ukraine. The meeting, hosted by Italy, which holds the rotating presidency of the Group of Seven industrialized nations (G7), took place in Naples. The main focus of the meeting was Russia's war against Ukraine, which has now entered its third year. In their final statement, the G7 defense ministers declared: "We are committed to continuing military support for Ukraine in the short and long term." The defense ministers of Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and the United States also expressed concern over the risk of escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon. The United Nations has held Israel responsible for attacks on UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in Lebanon. In a joint statement, the ministers said: "We are concerned about recent events in Lebanon and the risk of escalating conflicts, and we condemn any threats against the security of UNIFIL forces." They also urged the Islamic Republic to refrain from supporting militia groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Meanwhile, Iranian media reported that Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian foreign minister, met with a representative from Hamas in Istanbul. This meeting occurred just two days after the killing of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas. Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign policy chief, emphasized that Sinwar's death could create an opportunity to end the conflicts and called for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. Protests were held in the streets of Naples during the meeting, with demonstrators carrying Palestinian flags, some of whom clashed with police. The G7 reiterated its commitment to support Ukraine in the face of Russian threats and expressed concerns about potential military cooperation between North Korea and Russia. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the recent attacks on UNIFIL forces in Lebanon as "unacceptable" and called for strengthening the UN peacekeeping mission. Lloyd Austin emphasized the long-term commitment of the United States and NATO to assist a free and independent Ukraine, expressing concern over the deployment of North Korean soldiers to Russia to fight in Ukraine. A report from the White House detailed a meeting between Joe Biden and European leaders in Berlin, focusing on Ukraine and the Middle East. The return of the bodies of 501 Ukrainian soldiers by Russia was also mentioned, along with discussions between Zelensky and Western leaders about ending the war. Biden's visit to Germany highlighted the Middle East and Ukraine as key topics of discussion. Austin stated that American forces are prepared to defend Israel and prevent aggression. Zelensky noted that 12,000 North Korean military personnel have been stationed in Russia to fight in Ukraine. The coordination group for flight PS752 has registered its complaint against the Islamic Republic at the International Court of Justice.
